The Songs of Chu: An Anthology of Ancient Chinese Poetry by Qu Yuan and Others (Translations from the Asian Classics)

https://www.amazon.com/Songs-Chu-Anthology-Translations-Clas...
Sources show Qu Yuan (?340–278 BCE) was the first person in China to become famous for his poetry, so famous in fact that the Chinese celebrate his life with a national holiday called Poet's Day, or the Dragon Boat Festival. His work, which forms the core of the The Songs of Chu, the second oldest anthology of Chinese poetry, derives its imagery from shamanistic ritual. Its shaman hymns are among the most beautiful and mysterious liturgical works in the world. The religious milieu responsible for their imagery supplies the backdrop for his most famous work, Li sao, which translates shamanic longing for a spirit lover into the yearning for an ideal king that is central to the ancient philosophies of China. Qu Yuan was as important to the development of Chinese literature as Homer was to the development of Western literature. This translation attempts to replicate what the work might have meant to those for whom it was originally intended, rather than settle for what it was made to mean by those who inherited it. It accounts for the new view of the state of Chu that recent discoveries have inspired.

The Jiu Ge of the Chu Ci By Qu Yuan: English Interpretation by Millet B. Fisher

https://www.amazon.com/Jiu-Ge-Chu-Yuan-Interpretation-ebook/...
Qu Yuan (Chù Yúan, 340 - 278 BC) was a great romantic poet of Kingdom Chu (Chó) during the Warring States Period (475 - 221 BC) of ancient China. Originated by Qu Yuan, the Chu Ci (“Songs of the South” or “Songs of Chu”) had a distinguished poetic style that depicted the Chu’s language, emphasized the Chu’s dialect, recognized the Chu’s locale, and recorded the Chu’s livelihood. Within Chu Ci, the Jiu Ge (“Nine Songs”) was based upon the traditional worship gathering where the priests sang and danced to enact favors of the spiritual beings. The first poem, “One and Only, Imperial Highest, Lord of the East”, the welcoming prayer, and the last poem, “Holy Rites conclude”, the farewell prayer, both described the process of the spiritual ceremony. Each of the other seven poems was a specific prayer: “Lord Centre of the Clouds” was an ode to the shape-changer, in awe of the ever-changing nature of life; “my Lord of River-shun” and “my Lady of River-shun”, a lament of the tragic separation of the legendary couple, in praise of the ever-lasting love; “Fate the Elder” and “Fate the younger”, a prayer to the stars of fate, embracing the beginning and the ending of life; “Lord East of Elysium”, an ode to the sun, in awe of the energetic light encircling the sky; “Lord River Hoary-crinkle”, an ode to the river, in awe of the vibrant water nourishing the earth; “Lady Cryptic of Mount-woo”, a communion with the mountain fairy, enchanted by the ever-elusive enlightenment in pursuit of earthly depth and mystic heights; and “the Fallen in Prime, a Nation’s Pride”, a memorial to the heroic spirit, in honor of the loyal defenders of life.

“Li Sao" Cries in Aggrieved: 离骚 A Landmark Example of Chinese Poetry

https://www.amazon.com/Li-Sao-Cries-Aggrieved-Landmark-ebook...
离骚 "Li Sao"or “Cries in Cries in Aggrieved” is a Chinese poem dating from the Warring States period of ancient China. The early poetic tradition of China survives mainly through two anthologies, one being the Chuci, the other being the formally distinct Classic of Poetry (or Shijing). The poem "Li Sao" is the lead poem and the main inspiration for the Chuci collection. This famous piece was written by the person generally known as Qu Yuan, an aristocrat of the Kingdom of Chu. In his signature poem "Li Sao", Qu Yuan manifests himself in a poetic character, which is a major landmark in the tradition of Classical Chinese poetry, contrasting with the anonymous poetic voices encountered in the Shijing and the other early poems which exist as preserved in the form of incidental incorporations into various documents of ancient miscellany. The rest of the Chuci anthology is centered on the "Li Sao", the purported biography of its author Qu Yuan, and often its innovative epic poetic lines. In the "Li Sao", the poet despairs that he has been plotted against by evil factions at court with his resulting rejection by his lord and then recounts a series of shamanistic spirit journeys to various mythological realms, engaging or attempting to engage with a variety of divine or spiritual beings, with the theme of the righteous minister unfairly rejected sometimes becoming exaggerated in the long history of later literary criticism and allegorical interpretation. Dating from the time of King Huai of Chu, in the late third century BCE, the poem "Li Sao" is a remarkable example of Chinese poetry.

Post-Western Sociology - From China to Europe (China Policy Series)

https://www.amazon.com/Post-Western-Sociology-China-Europe-P...
This book is rooted in an epistemological approach to sociology in which the boundaries between Western and non-Western sociologies are acknowledged and built on. It argues that knowledge is organised in conceptual spaces linked to paradigms and programmes which in turn are linked to ethnocentred knowledge processes; that until recently Western approaches, including Post-Colonial, French Social Science and American approaches, have dominated non-Western theories; and that Western theories have sometimes seemed incapable of explaining phenomena produced in other societies. It goes on to argue that the blurring of boundaries between Western and non-Western sociologies is very important; and that such a Post-Western approach will mean co-production and co-construction of common knowledge, the recognition of ignored or forgotten scientific cultures and a "global change" in sociology which imposes theoretical and methodological detours, displacements, reversals and conversions. The book brings together a wide range of Western and Chinese sociologists who explore the consequences of this new approach in relation to many different issues and aspects of sociology.
