How to Hang A Witch

www.ebooks.com/cj.asp?IID=2263687&cjsku=2263687...
The #1 New York Times bestseller! It's the Salem Witch Trials meets Mean Girls inthis New York Times bestselling novel from one of the descendants of Cotton Mather, where the trials of high school start to feel like a modern-day witch hunt for a teen with all the wrong connections to Salem's past. Salem, Massachusetts, is the site of the infamous witch trials and the new home of Samantha Mather. Recently transplanted from New York City,Sam and her stepmother are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Sam is the descendant of Cotton Mather, one of the men responsible for those trialsand almost immediately, she becomes the enemy of a group of girls who call themselves the Descendants. And guess who their ancestors were? If dealing with that weren't enough, Sam also comes face to face with a real, live (well, technically dead) ghost. A handsome, angry ghost who wants Sam to stop touching his stuff. But soon Sam discovers she is at the center of a centuries-old curseaffecting anyone with ties to the trials. Sam must come to terms with the ghost and find a way to work with the Descendants to stop a deadly cycle that has been going on since the first accused witch was hanged. If any town should have learned its lesson, it's Salem. But history may be about to repeat itself. It's like Mean Girls meets history class in the best possible way. Seventeen Magazine Mather shines a light on the lessons the Salem Witch Trials can teach us about modern-day bullyingand what we can do about it. Bustle.com Strikes a careful balance of creepy, fun, and thoughtful. NPR I am utterly addicted to Mather's electric debut . It keeps you on the edge of your seat, twisting and turning with ghosts, witches, an ancient curse, andsighromance. It's beautiful. Haunting. The characters are vivid and real. I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down. Jennifer Niven, bestselling author of All the Bright Places

Hang 'Em High

www.ebooks.com/cj.asp?IID=1386973&cjsku=1386973...
For more than a century the Western film has proven to be an enduring genre. At the dawn of the 20th century, in the same years that The Great Train Robbery begat a film genre, Owen Wister wrote The Virginian, which began a new literary genre. From the beginning, both literature and film would usually perpetuate the myth of the Old West as a place where justice always triumphed and all concerned (except the villains) pursued the Law. The facts, however, reflect abuses of due process: lynch mobs and hired gunslingers rather than lawmen regularly pursued lawbreakers; vengeance rather than justice was often employed; and even in courts of law justice didn't always prevail. Some films and novels bucked this trend, however. This book discusses the many Western films as well as the novels they are based on, that illustrate distortions of the law in the Old West and the many ways, most of them marked by vengeance, in which its characters pursued justice. The author has used correspondence from studio files, letters from the Production Code office, newspaper and magazine reviews, passages from the novels to analyze not only the filmmakers' intentions but also how the films, contrary to reality, became a showcase of America as it promoted the principles of due process, trial by jury, and innocence before proven guilty.

Norman Rockwell 332 Magazine Covers

www.ebooks.com/cj.asp?IID=96381537&cjsku=96381537...
Now available for the first time as an e-book, Norman Rockwell 332 Magazine Covers features Rockwell's unique vision of America. All of his his justly famous cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post , painted between 1916 and 1963, are reproduced in splendid full color in a digital format, with commentaries by Christopher Finch, the noted writer on art and popular culture. There are few more satisfying sights on a city street than a well-stocked newsstand, hung with a hundred or more magazines and periodicals, each competing for the attention of the potential customer. The American magazine cover enjoyed a Golden Age during the period that opened with the high-speed color press, and ended when subscription sales grew to paramount importance. Dozens of gifted artists made their reputations in this field. None of them, however, achieved the immense and sustained popular success enjoyed by Norman Rockwell. Although technically he was an academic painter, he had the eye of a photographer and, as he became a mature artist, he used this eye to give us a picture of America that was familiarastonishingly soand at the same time unique. The picture seemed familiar because it was everyone's dream of America; it was unique because only Rockwell managed to bring it to life with such authority. Rockwell held up a friendly mirror to the society he lived in, and Americans have looked into this glass and seen themselves as warm, decent, hard-working citizens of a country bountiful enough to accommodate their boundless optimism.

How to Hang a Picture

www.ebooks.com/cj.asp?IID=1187950&cjsku=1187950...
Like tying a Windsor knot or brewing a perfect cup of coffee, knowing how to hang art on your wall is a hallmark of everyday style and nuts-and-bolts know-how. The where, what, and whys of hanging art are an overlooked, under-appreciated line of inquiry. Most of us simply wing it with a quick eyeball and a swing of the hammer. How hard can it be? we think. What can go wrong? The answer, of course, is plenty: crumbling plaster, ruined antique laths, mismatched art hung too-close together, or a poorly-mounted photograph warping in its frame. But beyond the technical mishaps, there is a more essential lesson to be learned: The skill and consideration with which you decorate your home makes an aesthetic statement about the world you inhabit-and more importantly, when it's done right, it very clearly looks a whole lot better. Slim and stylish, How to Hang a Picture: And Other Essential Lessons for a Stylish Home is a user-friendly guidebook that details everything you need to know about hanging, framing, decorating and displaying art. If Strunk & White's Elements of Style was crossed with a no-nonsense how-to manual, you will have captured the tone and immediacy of How to Hang a Picture : simple rules and essential information presented with charm and intelligence.
