An Improved Particle Swarm Optimization forProficient Solving of Unit Commitment Problem

This paper presents a new approach to solving the short-term unit commitment problem using an improved Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO). The objective of this paper is to find the generation scheduling such that the total operating cost can be minimized, when subjected to a variety of constraints. This also means that it is desirable to find the optimal generating unit commitment in the power system for the next H hours. PSO, which happens to be a Global Optimization technique for solving Unit Commitment Problem, operates on a system, which is designed to encode each unit’s operating schedule with regard to its minimum up/down time. In this, the unit commitment schedule is coded as a string of symbols. An initial population of parent solutions is generated at random. Here, each schedule is formed by committing all the units according to their initial status (“flat start”).

Solving Unit Commitment Problem UsingChemo-tactic PSO–DE Optimization AlgorithmCombined

This paper presents Chemo-tactic PSO-DE (CPSO-DE) optimization algorithm combined with Lagrange Relaxation method (LR) for solving Unit Commitment (UC) problem. The proposed approach employs Chemo-tactic PSO-DE algorithm for optimal settings of Lagrange multipliers. It provides high-quality performance and reaches global solution and is a hybrid heuristic algorithm based on Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Differential Evolution (DE). The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated for 10-unit, 20-unit, and 40-unit systems respectively.

Profit based unit commitment for GENCOs usingParallel PSO in a distributed cluster

In the deregulated electricity market, each generating company has to maximize its own profit by committing suitable generation schedule termed as profit based unit commitment (PBUC). This article proposes a Parallel Particle Swarm Optimization (PPSO) solution to the PBUC problem. This method has better convergence characteristics in obtaining optimum solution. The proposed approach uses a cluster of computers performing parallel operations in a distributed environment for obtaining the PBUC solution. The time complexity and the solution quality with respect to the number of processors in the cluster are thoroughly tested.

Security Constrained UCP with Operational andPower Flow Constraints

An algorithm to solve security constrained unit commitment problem (UCP) with both operational and power flow constraints (PFC) have been proposed to plan a secure and economical hourly generation schedule. This proposed algorithm introduces an efficient unit commitment (UC) approach with PFC that obtains the minimum system operating cost satisfying both unit and network constraints when contingencies are included. In the proposed model repeated optimal power flow for the satisfactory unit combinations for every line removal under given study period has been carried out to obtain UC solutions with both unit and network constraints. The system load demand patterns have been obtained for the test case systems taking into account of the hourly load variations at the load buses by adding Gaussian random noises.

Bidding Strategy Using Differential Evolution in a Day-ahead Market

The emerging electricity market behaves more like an oligopoly than a perfectly competitive market due to limited number of products, transmission constraints and transmission losses. This imperfect market situation influences each power supplier to maximize its profit through strategic bidding. This paper discusses the optimal bidding strategies of Generating companies (Gencos) for a single and multi hourly trading period in a day ahead market solved using Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm for the first time. It is assumed that each Genco bids a linear supply function, and chooses the coefficient in the linear supply function to maximize their benefits, subject to expectations about how the rivals will bid. A normal probability distribution function (pdf) is used to describe the bidding behaviors of rivals and the problem of building optimal bidding strategies for Gencos is formulated as stochastic optimization problem.

An Enhanced Inherited Crossover GA for theReliability Constrained UC Problem

This paper solves reliability constrained unit commitment problem (UCP) for a composite power system network using network equivalent technique. Here, the integration of generation and transmission system reliability forms a composite power system model. The inclusion of load forecast uncertainty for the solution of unit commitment problem will give more accurate assessment of spinning reserve (SR). Probabilistic techniques help in setting the reserve requirement which is defined by reliability indices such as loss of load probability (LOLP) and expected energy not supplied (EENS). Reliability network equivalent techniques represent each market player in a power market. The unit commitment problem is solved by a genetic algorithm (GA) resulting in near-optimal unit commitment solutions and the required spinning reserve capacity is effectively scheduled according to the desired reliability level.
