The LGBT Alliance began in 1996 as the Gay and Lesbian Task Force of the Jewish Community Federation. By December 2001, the LGBT Alliance began its efforts as a full-fledged division of the Jewish Community Federation. It is the first (and currently the only) dedicated LGBT division of a U.S. Jewish Federation. This document is the history of the lay leaders that made our community what it is today.

This Needs Assessment of the San Francisco Bay Area LGBT Jewish Community was conducted from 2008 – 2009 and published in 2010 by Jewish Mosaic: The National Center for Sexual & Gender Diversity an organization that merged with Keshet in 2010. The research for this study was directed by Dr. Caryn Aviv. The LGBT Alliance Planning and Advisory Group (PAG) of the Jewish Community Federation of the Greater East Bay and the Jewish Community Federation of San Francisco, The Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties advised the work between 2008 and 2010 under the staff direction of Karen Bluestone, Rabbi James Brandt, Dr. Wendy Rosov, Samuel Strauss and Lisa Finkelstein.
