Best Dives of Hawaii

www.ebooks.com/cj.asp?IID=465717&cjsku=465717...
Based on the all-encompassing Best Dives of the Western Hemisphere, this publication focuses on the Hawaiian islands of Oahu, Maui, Kaua, Lanai, Molokai and the Big Island. Includes the latest and best dive and snorkel sites, each rated for visual excellence and marine life. The author's knowledge of the sites is unparalleled. From sunken planes and snorkel trails to blue holes, the best destinations beneath the waves are covered. Also covered are the best places to stay & eat, activities, sightseeing and all practical details needed for visitors. "I have bought both editions of this book, mostly because the first edition got so dog-eared that I wanted a clean one for vacation last year. The book is a marvelous source of information for both the snorkeler and the diver. The authors divide the book into chapters on individual islands, starting out with a brief but interesting history of the island, a topographical description, relative location map, best time to go, weather, and proximity to other islands. They then rate the island's diving locations, awarding from 1 to 5 stars, and provide another larger map visually locating the sites. Each site is described in detail, with info on depth, sea life, currents, visibility, photo ops and difficulty level. As if that weren't enough, they include some (but not enough!) beautiful photos, and end each chapter with yet more info on dive operators (detailed), beaches, other activities, dining, accommodations (with rates, addresses and phone numbers), medical facilities, documentation requirements, currency, driving, local customs, departure taxes, etc. I take this compact book with me everywhere. My only complaint: I wish they covered more islands!" -- (Suziekew). Diver-friendly resorts and hotels are featured, along with many recommended outfitters for learning, improving and mastering your diving skills. A list of decompression chambers is given. Landlubbers will appreciate the sightseeing sections. Color photos enhance the text. Maps show dive site locations. A must-have for divers, snorkelers, or those who just love to float in liquid turquoise. -- Brenda Fine, Travel Editor, NY Law Journal. Don't plan a dive without it! Concise and informative... one of the few bargains of the decade. -- Wendy Canning Church, Divers Exchange International. It's super! A great reference and we love it. -- Dive Travel Magazine. The bible of dive-travel. I highly recommend it. -- Chris Lofting, The Travel Show, WOR Network Radio. When I'm thinking about where to go diving next, I always thumb through this gem... It's a trustworthy publication. -- In Depth/Undercurrent Magazine. "I thought this was one of the best books for the travelling diver that I have ever read. A recent trip to Aruba proved it. Recommendations are still right on the mark." -- C. Harmon

"This is one of the best guidebooks I've ever read... I could never do everything in this book if I had a year of vacation instead of two weeks. But it'll be fun to try." -- Laura Suraci. "Anyone who is planning a trip to Hawaii would benefit from this book. I've already been there, but now I can't wait to go back!" -- Jerry Dunlap. "This book got me totally psyched for my trip to the Big Island. And then it was even better once we were there! We went to so many places that we would never have known about, from bars and restaurants to killer beaches. The writing style was really fun and easy to read. If you're planning a trip to Hawaii, buy this book!" -- C.A. Kennedy. "There is so much information packed in here that I wish we had more time for our trip. After reading through the guide, I feel like I'm prepared to spend months on the island trying out something new every day, or just relaxing in great locals' spots that other guides don't cover. This has been a tremendous help in planning our trip." -- Guidebooklover. "We have been coming to the Big Island for years. This guide provided us with tons of valuable local insights....This is by far the BEST Big Island guide book I have ever used!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this guide!" -- Marcia Elvidge. "I've been to Hawaii several times and used other guidebooks, but this is the best I've ever seen." - Coltrane. We travel to grow - our Adventure Guides show you how. Experience the places you visit more directly, freshly, intensely than you would otherwise - sometimes best done on foot, in a canoe, or through cultural adventures like art courses, cooking classes, learning the language, meeting the people, joining in the festivals and celebrations. This can make your trip life-changing, unforgettable. All of the detailed information you need is here about the hotels, restaurants, shopping, sightseeing. But we also lead you to new discoveries, turning corners you haven't turned before, helping you to interact with the world in new ways. That's what makes our Adventure Guides unique. Written by two island residents, here is the most extensive and up-to-date guide by far. A land of superlatives, the Big Island is home to Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano that is one of the Earth?s highest. Another volcano, Kilauea, is the most active on our planet. The lush tropical forests, the lava flow deserts, the sun-drenched beaches, the cuisine, the fiery sunsets and the idyllic weather are unforgettable. Try snorkeling in a coral garden, swimming with dolphins, night diving with manta rays, hiking to a waterfall, horseback riding through Paniolo Country, taking a helicopter ride over Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, examining petroglyphs, skiing Mauna Kea, surfing, whale-watching, or learning the hula.

Pulitzer Prize–winning author James A. Michener brings Hawaii’s epic history vividly to life in a classic saga that has captivated readers since its initial publication in 1959. As the volcanic Hawaiian Islands sprout from the ocean floor, the land remains untouched for centuries—until, little more than a thousand years ago, Polynesian seafarers make the perilous journey across the Pacific, flourishing in this tropical paradise according to their ancient traditions. Then, in the early nineteenth century, American missionaries arrive, bringing with them a new creed and a new way of life. Based on exhaustive research and told in Michener’s immersive prose, Hawaii is the story of disparate peoples struggling to keep their identity, live in harmony, and, ultimately, join together. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from James A. Michener's Centennial. Praise for Hawaii “Wonderful . . . [a] mammoth epic of the islands.”—The Baltimore Sun “One novel you must not miss! A tremendous work from every point of view—thrilling, exciting, lusty, vivid, stupendous.”—Chicago Tribune “From Michener’s devotion to the islands, he has written a monumental chronicle of Hawaii, an extraordinary and fascinating novel.”—Saturday Review “Memorable . . . a superb biography of a people.”—Houston Chronicle

In 1962, at 24 years old, Knight decided to pursue a business idea he researched in a Stanford University business class: introducing Japanese running shoes to the United States to compete with dominant European brands. This would require a trip to Japan. Knight wanted to extend this trip into a voyage around the world, so he acquired a loan from his father in Portland, Oregon. Knight planned an itinerary with a friend from Stanford. After a brief stay in Hawaii, Knight continued his journey without his traveling companion. In Japan, Knight met with executives at Onitsuka Tiger shoe company. He offered to become their US distributor as Blue Ribbon Sports.
