Cholera- and Anthrax-Like Toxins
Computer tools helped us uncover and understand potent protein toxins that empower bacterial pathogens against plants, animals and man. These toxins are potential drug targets and researchers can use them to make vaccines. New toxin knowledge aids the long-term goal of finding alternatives to antibiotics, to which pathogens are becoming more resistant. The toxins share similar structure despite low sequence identity, so our search links sequence and structure features. We present a ranked list and computational characterization of six new toxins combined with cell-based tests.

Face Recognition Using Sign Only Correlation
In this work we examine a face recognition system based on advanced correlation filters. A thorough theoretical design analysis of, Minimum Average Correlation Energy (MACE) filters and Optimum Trade-off Synthetic Discriminant Function (OTSDF) also commonly known as Optimal Trade-off Filter (OTF) is provided. In practice one of the major computational aspects in the correlation filter design is representation of complex floating point Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) coefficients using limited precision memory. In order to over come the floating point memory requirement of the correlation based filters for systems with limited computational resources use of Discrete Cosine Transform Sign-Only Correlation (DCTSOC) which deals with only the sign information of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) has been proposed.

Needle in the haystack: structure-based toxin discovery
In the current data-rich era, making the leap from sequence data to knowledge is a task that requires an elegant bioinformatics toolset to pinpoint pressing research questions. Therefore, a strategy to expand important protein-family knowledge is required, particularly in cases in which primary sequence identity is low but structural conservation is high. For example, the mono-ADP-ribosylating toxins fit these criteria and several approaches have been used to accelerate the discovery of new family members. The strategy evolved from conduction of PSI–BLAST searches through to the combination of secondary-structure prediction with pattern-based searches. However, a newly developed tactic, in which fold recognition dominates, reduces reliance on sequence similarity and advances scientists toward a true structure-based protein-family expansion methodology.

Rapid face recognition using hashing
We propose a face recognition approach based on hashing. The approach yields comparable recognition rates with the random L1 approach, which is considered the state of the art. But our method is much faster: it is up to 150 times faster on the YaleB dataset.
