Mathematics: Its Content, Methods and Meaning (Dover Books on Mathematics)

https://www.amazon.com/Mathematics-Content-Methods-Meaning-D...
". . . Nothing less than a major contribution to the scientific culture of this world." — The New York Times Book ReviewThis major survey of mathematics, featuring the work of 18 outstanding Russian mathematicians and including material on both elementary and advanced levels, encompasses 20 prime subject areas in mathematics in terms of their simple origins and their subsequent sophisticated developement. As Professor Morris Kline of  New York University noted, "This unique work presents the amazing panorama of  mathematics proper. It is the best answer in print to what mathematics contains both on the elementary and advanced levels."Beginning with an overview and analysis of mathematics, the first of three major divisions of the book progresses to an exploration of analytic geometry, algebra, and ordinary differential equations. The second part introduces partial differential equations, along with theories of curves and surfaces, the calculus of variations, and functions of a complex variable. It furthur examines prime numbers, the theory of probability, approximations, and the role of computers in mathematics. The theory of functions of a real variable opens the final section, followed by discussions of linear algebra and nonEuclidian geometry, topology, functional  analysis, and groups and other algebraic systems.Thorough, coherent explanations of each topic are further augumented by numerous illustrative figures, and every chapter concludes with a suggested reading list. Formerly issued as a three-volume set, this mathematical masterpiece is now available in a convenient and modestly priced one-volume edition, perfect for study or reference."This is a masterful English translation of a stupendous and formidable mathematical masterpiece . . ." — Social Science

The Murder on the Links: A Hercule Poirot Mystery (Dover Mystery Classics)

https://www.amazon.com/Murder-Links-Hercule-Mystery-Classics...
"Here is a remarkably good detective story." — The New York Times Book Review "For God's sake, come!" implores the letter to Hercule Poirot from Paul Renauld. A wealthy English financier living in France, Renauld hints at being in possession of a deadly secret. The Belgian sleuth — accompanied by Captain Hastings, his friend from The Mysterious Affair at Styles — rushes to answer the call but arrives too late. Stabbed in the back, Poirot's would-be client lies in a shallow grave on the golf course alongside his estate. Renauld's wife, found bound and gagged in her bedroom, identifies a pair of masked intruders as the likeliest culprits. But the thugs prove untraceable even as the roster of suspects expands. The instant dislike formed between Poirot and Monsieur Giraud of the Paris Sûreté further intensifies the investigation, which becomes a competition between their radically different approaches to crime detection. Both are incapable of solving the murder until the discovery of a second corpse, slain in the same manner as the first, provides fresh clues. Agatha Christie's lively and stylish whodunit offers mystery lovers an abundance of twists and turns as well as a dash of romance.

Art Forms in Nature (Dover Pictorial Archive)

https://www.amazon.com/Forms-Nature-Dover-Pictorial-Archive-...
Ernst Heinrich Haeckel (1834–1919) was renowned as one of the foremost early exponents of Darwinism. His work was credited with having caused the acceptance of Darwinism in Europe, and his popular studies ― preaching the continuity of all life, organic and inorganic, from prehistoric time to the present ― converted tens of thousands of readers all over the world. Today, although no one is greatly interested in Haeckel the biologist-philosopher, his work is increasingly prized for something he himself would probably have considered secondary. These are the remarkable plates with which his work was illustrated, particularly his famous Kunstformen. The Kunstformen contains 100 beautiful lithographic plates which show a multitude of unusual life forms: Radiolaria, Foraminifera, and other forms of microscopic life; jellyfishes, starfishes, calcareous sponges, star corals, barnacles, and other sea life; mosses, lichens, red algae, ferns, fungi, orchids, and other plants; and turtles, moths, spiders, bats, frogs, lizards, hummingbirds, and antelope. With many drawings on each plate, each carefully drawn from nature, the subtle details of nature's art forms are easily compared and appreciated. In addition to being marvelous renderings, these plates have long been noted for the peculiar emotional appeal that they have for most viewers, a premonition of surrealism with exotic organic life forms stretching back to their roots in the inorganic, and individual details drawn with awareness of subtle evolutionary changes and millennia-long developments. Artists, illustrators, and others will find them still powerful as one of the landmarks of applied art.

Solved Problems in Classical Electromagnetism (Dover Books on Physics)

https://www.amazon.com/Solved-Problems-Classical-Electromagn...
Solved Problems in Classical Electromagnetism is a valuable tool to help students learn to do physics while using concepts they learn in the courses. Students who are taking or have already taken an advanced EM course will find the book to be a useful adjunct to their textbook, giving added practice in applying what they are learning. For students who are taking an undergraduate EM course and want to get more depth, this book can help them achieve that aim and also help them prepare for graduate work. Beginning students, or those not even taking a course at the moment, can benefit from these problems and learn just from working on them with the help of the solutions. In each chapter, the problems start out relatively easy and then get progressively more advanced, helping students to go just as far as they can at their present level. The book includes a number of review sections to assist students without previous advanced training in working out the problems. The first review section is a comprehensive development of vector calculus that will prepare students to solve the problems and provide a strong foundation for their future development as physicists. The problems are drawn from the topics of electrostatics, magnetostatics, Maxwell's equations, electromagnetic radiation, and relativisitc electromagnetism.

Introductory Discrete Mathematics (Dover Books on Computer Science)

https://www.amazon.com/Introductory-Discrete-Mathematics-Com...
This concise text offers an introduction to discrete mathematics for undergraduate students in computer science and mathematics. Mathematics educators consider it vital that their students be exposed to a course in discrete methods that introduces them to combinatorial mathematics and to algebraic and logical structures focusing on the interplay between computer science and mathematics. The present volume emphasizes combinatorics, graph theory with applications to some stand network optimization problems, and algorithms to solve these problems.Chapters 0–3 cover fundamental operations involving sets and the principle of mathematical induction, and standard combinatorial topics: basic counting principles, permutations, combinations, the inclusion-exclusion principle, generating functions, recurrence relations, and an introduction to the analysis of algorithms. Applications are emphasized wherever possible and more than 200 exercises at the ends of these chapters help students test their grasp of the material.Chapters 4 and 5 survey graphs and digraphs, including their connectedness properties, applications of graph coloring, and more, with stress on applications to coding and other related problems. Two important problems in network optimization ― the minimal spanning tree problem and the shortest distance problem ― are covered in the last two chapters. A very brief nontechnical exposition of the theory of computational complexity and NP-completeness is outlined in the appendix.
