This is a fictional murder mystery set in 1897 at the site of the infamous Hatfield and McCoy feud. The protagonist is Richard James, Deputy Sheriff of Mingo County stationed at Matewan, West Virginia on the Tug River. Richard is a transplanted Canadian who finds himself having to juggle cultural differences, grief over the recent loss of his wife and son, and a murder investigation, after a McCoy is found dead from a questionable snake bite. The death threatens to reignite the Hatfield/McCoy feud as Richard struggles to solve it. Historical characters involved in the plot are "Devil" Anse Hatfield, the leader of the Hatfield clan and Mary Harris Jones, union organizer for the United Mine Workers. Through it all runs the Tug, hence the title. Most of the action takes place on, in or around the little river winding its way through the mountains as the border between West Virginia and Kentucky.
