The Noble Profession of Leaf Chasing

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-noble-profession-of-lea...
In the late nineteenth century Austro-Hungarian Empire, two Jewish astronomy professors work tirelessly to unearth new academic research for their chosen field. But their participation in adultery, deception, and murder will follow them throughout time, weaving a complicated web into future generations, and setting the stage for the age-old question, "Are the sins of the fathers visited upon the sons?" Years later, the professors' families having immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, the old axiom comes to a strange and chilling climax. The grandsons of the astronomers supposedly influenced by ancient Jewish mysticism are murdered-one allegedly at the hands of the other. Detective Sergeant Marty Kowalski investigates the murders, with the assistance of an astronomy professor and two of her students from the University of Michigan. Spending considerable time and meticulous effort, Kowalski slowly unravels the complicated past behind the two victims and unearths a shattering truth that will leave both families reeling. A fascinating blend of philosophy, history, and religion, The Noble Profession of Leaf Chasing delivers a compelling read.

The Totally Gross History of Medieval Europe

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-totally-gross-history-o...
This entertaining volume reveals some of the grossest practices in hygiene, dining, fashion, and medicine of Medieval Europe. Serfs often smelled bad, and they bathed and relieved themselves in streams filled with garbage. Wealthier individuals who had bathrooms produced waste that was sent down chutes into the castle moat. Peasants and nobles commonly consumed animal parts that today we would consider less appetizing, including paws, brains, stomachs, and lungs. Poor nutrition resulted in rotting teeth and scurvy. Doctors were woefully backward in treating patients, using odd remedies such as ground-up worms, bloodletting through leeches, and spreading animal dung on wounds.

A selection from Martindale's story titled, You Plan the Best Picnics: "They met in Barnes & Noble's Starbuck's. Each had an expensive book to browse and never buy. However, the sky was threatening, the Friday afternoon free and the shortbread tasty. His name was Tucker, and he spotted the lovely girl first. He stared at her which he knew would make her look toward him, and she did. Instantly their eyes bounced off each other and back to their unimportant pages. Tucker did it again. After their eyes met for the second time, he made sign language, his own. He pointed to himself, then he pointed to her table, raised his brows and waited to see if she performed some form of headshake meaning yes. She did better than that. She pulled out her empty chair and pointed to it, a bit of a smile on her face." Some of us eat to live; others live to eat. Soon we realize how important food is to all peoples, rich or poor, how celebratory, how labor-intense, how meager for some and extremely regional. Food matters all around us due to its history, evolution, sheer fun, traveling ways, versatility, acquisition, recipe adaptation, preparation and marketing through simple evolution. "Marty's writing is captivating. It has just enough humo

Cinderella and Other Stories from "The Blue Fairy Book

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/cinderella-and-other-storie...
Andrew Lang (1844-1912) was a brilliant Scottish scholar, man of letters, and serious student of folklore. His series of "fairy books" is generally regarded as among the richest collections in the English language. Gathered from around the world - from Norse and Icelandic sources, from the Far East, Mideast, Europe, Africa, Australia, and many other areas - these books not only introduced generations of youngsters to the enchanting world of fairyland but gave adults an opportunity to return to the wonderful realm of make-believe. This delightful selection of six popular tales from Lang's Blue Fairy Book includes charming versions of "Cinderella," "The Bronze Ring," "Felicia and the Pot of Pinks," "The White Cat," "The Story of Pretty Goldilocks," and "Snow-white and Rose-red." New illustrations by Marty Noble capture all the romance and magic of these time-honored tales. Reset in large, easy-to-read type, these perennial favorites will delight today's young audiences just as they enthralled readers when first published over a century ago.

Life Lessons

https://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebook/life-lessons-20...
In Life Lessons, Rita de Brún interviews some of Ireland's most interesting characters. From judges, politicians and diplomats, to poets, commentators and campaigners, the contributors to this book come from a wide range of backgrounds and inhabit all walks of life. Despite their differences, there are uniting forces. All are fired by a drive to be true to who they are and follow their passions. All have their own life lessons to impart. As individuals we are all unique, but we are also very much the same. Our life circumstances and paths differ wildly, but behind the superficiality of class, status and wealth, most of us - at one time or another - ponder the same questions: what matters most, who are we at our very core and what has life taught us? In this collection, which is composed of snippets of one-to-one conversations Rita de Brún had with twenty-one Irish women and men, the sameness and interconnectedness of us all becomes apparent, as does the inherent goodness, ordinariness, humbleness and spirituality that is central to the sheer extraordinariness of some of those that we admire the most. The Woodlanders

https://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebook/the-woodlanders-31...
This is the annotated edition including a rare biographical essay on the life and works of the author. In "The Woodlanders" we have the intimate sense of the mystery and the passion of nature; again we have the wonderful power of describing rural characters; again we have the closely knit and powerful action; we even have glimpses of the old humor. Still there is an indefinable something that separates the author of "The Woodlanders" from the author of "Far from the Madding Crowd." Twelve years have made Mr. Hardy a more practised writer, they have given him a wider experience, but they have not made him any more in love with life. On the contrary, as has been indicated, they have frequently made him see little in life except a purposeless struggle in the coils of an implacable fate. And so Giles Winterbourne in "The Woodlanders" fails in the pursuit of his love, which is his life, when Farmer Oak, in "Far from the Madding Crowd" succeeds. Honesty, loyalty, and love meet death for their reward; while a barely decent repentance on the part of a rather repulsive personage is rewarded by the love of a heroine who though scarcely noble is worthy of a better fate. It, therefore, matters little when we view "The Woodlanders" as a whole, whether the descriptions of the forests to be found in its pages are unexcelled in truth and beauty even by Mr. Hardy himself, or whether the scene which describes Marty South dressing the grave of Winterbourne is the finest in the whole range of our author's novels; for the total impression produced by the book is painful because the fate that rules its characters is to Mr. Hardy, as well as to his readers, the relentless fate of alien times and peoples. And yet how powerful and original the book is, and who else among modern Englishmen could have written it!
