Sand Lake

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/sand-lake-1...
Sand Lake Township lies just south of Troy and east of Albany. This community was a center of water-powered industry in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Dams on Crystal, Glass, and Burden Lakes provided waterpower for mills along the Wynantskill and finally for the largest waterwheel in North America at Burden Iron Works in Troy. When the railway arrived, the township with its seven lakes and numerous hotels blossomed into a tourist destination. In Sand Lake you will find Dr. Smith Boughton as "Big Thunder" in the Anti-Rent Wars of the mid-1800s, coded messages issued from church pulpits for transporting slaves via the Underground Railroad, Uline's Infallible Remedy cure-all, the Park Pharmacy soda fountain manned by teenager (later comedian) Jerry Lewis, and Gov. TheodoreRoosevelt at Brown's Crooked Lake House.

Speaking Minds: Interviews with Twenty Eminent Cognitive Scientists

https://store.kobobooks.com/en-US/ebook/speaking-minds-inter...
Few developments in the intellectual life of the past quarter-century have provoked more controversy than the attempt to engineer human-like intelligence by artificial means. Born of computer science, this effort has sparked a continuing debate among the psychologists, neuroscientists, philosophers, and linguists who have pioneered-and criticized-artificial intelligence. Are there general principles, as some computer scientists had originally hoped, that would fully describe the activity of both animal and machine minds, just as aerodynamics accounts for the flight of birds and airplanes? In the twenty substantial interviews published here, leading researchers address this and other vexing questions in the field of cognitive science. The interviewees include Patricia Smith Churchland (Take It Apart and See How It Runs), Paul M. Churchland (Neural Networks and Commonsense), Aaron V. Cicourel (Cognition and Cultural Belief), Daniel C. Dennett (In Defense of AI), Hubert L. Dreyfus (Cognitivism Abandoned), Jerry A. Fodor (The Folly of Simulation), John Haugeland (Farewell to GOFAI?), George Lakoff (Embodied Minds and Meanings), James L. McClelland (Toward a Pragmatic Connectionism), Allen Newell (The Serial Imperative), Stephen E. Palmer (Gestalt Psychology Redux), Hilary Putnam (Against the New Associationism), David E. Rumelhart (From Searching to Seeing), John R. Searle (Ontology Is the Question), Terrence J. Sejnowski (The Hardware Really Matters), Herbert A. Simon (Technology Is Not the Problem), Joseph Weizenbaum (The Myth of the Last Metaphor), Robert Wilensky (Why Play the Philosophy Game?), Terry A.Winograd (Computers and Social Values), and Lotfi A. Zadeh (The Albatross of Classical Logic). Speaking Minds can complement more traditional textbooks but can also stand alone as an introduction to the field. Moscow Believes in Tears: Russians and Their Movies

This unique collection of writings and interviews highlights the important role that cinema can play for understanding Russian history, politics, culture and society in all phases-Tsarist, Soviet and post-Soviet. "This is the book for the Russian movie aficionado - personal, pointed, funny, frank and full of all kinds of inside stories and political folk tales. It is a fascinating window on Soviet/Russian pop culture that only a cultural Marco Polo and fanatical movie-goer like Louis Menashe would even dare attempt." -Hedrick Smith, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Russians and The New Russians "Menashe combines an encyclopedic knowledge of Russian history and society of the past 50 years with a broad-ranging and sensitive eye for cinematic meaning and detail." -Anthony Anemone, The New School University "This sparkling collection of film reviews, essays and interviews with filmmakers is a cultural history of Russia over the past 25 years. Highly recommended to everyone interested in Russia and the movies." -Denise J. Youngblood, University of Vermont, and author of Cinematic Cold War: The American and Soviet Struggle for Hearts and Minds. "A great national cinema is explored in its myriad colors and textures. Not a traditional history, the book is an archive of insights captured across years of passionate viewing." -Jerry W. Carlson, The City College and Graduate Center CUNY, host of the popular program, "City Cinematheque." "Menashe allows us to see both Russia's present and her past through his crisp, clear and fresh lens of a true expert who loves the country and its films, but always remains critical enough to see their flaws and merits." -Birgit Beumers, University of Bristol

Gaither's Corner

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/gaither-s-corner...
When one asks me if I believe in angels, I always answer yes! I cannot prove there are any otherworldly/spiritual beings "out there"; the angels in which I believe are those who have graced my life-some for long periods of time, others for but moments. Whichever, at the time, each was crucial to my emotional survival. Most of these I list in categories, as to name them individually would fill another book. First, I list my parents, Herman and Bertha McCullough, and siblings (Lee, Al, Eileen, Paul, and Doyle) who, though at times mystified by my struggles for faith, have loved me no less. Next, I mention the members of the church congregations I served (all United Methodists): Camp Creek Emmanuel and Manhattan College Avenue in Kansas and Rivera, Mission First, Oxford, and Helotes Hills in Texas. Others who hold a special place in my soul, listed from my youth forward, are Bob and Marie Gaither, Bill Gaither, J.T. Truax, Uncle Floyd Goins, cousin Howard Goins, Leo Slagg, Walter and Naomi Larsen, A. Bond Woodruff, Elmore E. Vail, Dick Neiderhiser, Jim Mitchell, Wendy Parsons, Delbert Gish, Joe Grider, Cecil Findley, Larry Guillot, Clyde Miller, Bob Winkler, Byron Hollinger, Muriel Hunkins, John Lewis, Mel Witmer, Bryce Kramer, Martin Pike, Jay Brown, Patty Johnson, Don Carper, Jerry J. Smith, Homer Bain, and my canasta-playing friends, who have endured twelve years of listening to my angry complaints against what I consider to be the madness of the status quo. My daughters, Kira and Dana, somehow survived despite my, at times, being adrift in near mental illness. Thus I am deeply indebted to their patience and love. And finally, I make tribute to my wife, Jean, who, though not religious, is the most nurturing-and, thus, spiritual-person I have ever known. - Xlibris Podcast Part 1: http://www. xlibrispodcasts.com/gaithers-corner-1/ - Xlibris Podcast Part 2: http://www. xlibrispodcasts.com/gaithers-corner-2/ - Xlibris Podcast Part 3: http://www. xlibrispodcasts.com/gait
