Conner Meets Dark Cloud

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/conner-meets-dark-cloud...
After the Civil War, countless arrivals from around the world pushed into the West; some seeking treasure, but most were hoping for the chance for a new life in the New World. But a dark cloud hung over the area: the Indians who were already living here. The new United States government helped the new settlers by placing Indians on reservations, providing US troops to maintain order. One of these was Sgt. Conner, who had just guided four new settlers into a lovely mountain glade. Upon his return, he learned sadly that a band of young braves had attacked a wagon train killing all but two, a boy in his early teens, and his older sister who had been taken alive by the leader of the band, Dark Cloud. The next day, Conner and his troops recovered the bodies and belongings of the settlers. But to Conner's dismay, there were tracks of the attackers heading toward the very mountain glade he had just visited. Dreading the outcome he led some troops back to that glade and found the four new settlers killed by the attacking Indians. While there, the site was visited by Chief Three Eagles who accepted his braves as responsible but added white men were involved. Conner returned to the fort to learn what he could from the two survivors. Would the Indians and white men be brought to justice? What would become of the two orphaned survivors?

Clouds Thick, Whereabouts Unknown

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/clouds-thick-whereabouts-un...
Compiled by a leading scholar of Chinese poetry, Clouds Thick, Whereabouts Unknown is the first collection of Chan (Zen) poems to be situated within Chan thought and practice. Combined with exquisite paintings by Charles Chu, the anthology compellingly captures the ideological and literary nuances of works that were composed, paradoxically, to "say more by saying less," and creates an unparalleled experience for readers of all backgrounds. Clouds Thick, Whereabouts Unknown includes verse composed by monk-poets of the eighth to the seventeenth centuries. Their style ranges from the direct vernacular to the evocative and imagistic. Egan's faithful and elegant translations of poems by Han Shan, Guanxiu, and Qiji, among many others, do justice to their perceptions and insights, and his detailed notes and analyses unravel centuries of Chan metaphor and allusion. In these gems, monk-poets join mainstream ideas on poetic function to religious reflection and proselytizing, carving out a distinct genre that came to influence generations of poets, critics, and writers. The simplicity of Chan poetry belies its complex ideology and sophisticated language, elements Egan vividly explicates in his religious and literary critique. His interpretive strategies enable a richer understanding of Mahayana Buddhism, Chan philosophy, and the principles of Chinese poetry.

Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, and the Demise of Naturalism

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/alasdair-macintyre-charles-...
Today the ethical and normative concerns of everyday citizens are all too often sidelined from the study of political and social issues, driven out by an effort to create a more "scientific" study. This book offers a way for social scientists and political theorists to reintegrate the empirical and the normative, proposing a way out of the scientism that clouds our age. In Alasdair MacIntyre, Charles Taylor, and the Demise of Naturalism, Jason Blakely argues that the resources for overcoming this divide are found in the respective intellectual developments of Charles Taylor and Alasdair MacIntyre. Blakely examines their often parallel intellectual journeys, which led them to critically engage the British New Left, analytic philosophy, phenomenology, continental hermeneutics, and modern social science. Although MacIntyre and Taylor are not sui generis, Blakely claims they each present a new, revived humanism, one that insists on the creative agency of the human person against reductive, instrumental, technocratic, and scientistic ways of thinking. The recovery of certain key themes in these philosophers' works generates a new political philosophy with which to face certain unprecedented problems of our age. Taylor's and MacIntyre's philosophies give social scientists working in all disciplines (from economics and sociology to political science and psychology) an alternative theoretical framework for conducting research.
