Embassy to the Eastern Courts

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/embassy-to-the-eastern-cour...
In the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars, the U.S. found its merchants and traders locked out of their traditional markets in Europe and the Caribbean. Hoping for new and profitable American trade relationships, President Andrew Jackson dispatched an unemployed ship-owner and merchant with no diplomatic experience on a secret mission to negotiate with Eastern potentates in their courts. Edmund Roberts' mission was to formalize American trade with these exotic places-Oman, Siam, Cochin China, and Japan-on a most favored nation basis, allowing for American consuls to openly advance and protect American interests and citizens in their host country. After sailing almost 70,000 miles in five years in the ill-fated USS Peacock, Roberts was successful in negotiating treaties with Oman and Siam, but he failed in Cochin China, and he died before setting sail to Japan. Peacock, first flagship of the Navy's new East Indies Squadron, forerunner of the U.S. Seventh Fleet, outlived him by only a few years.

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/tiffany-windows-stained-gla...
The studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany produced a wealth of stained glass objects at the turn of the century, but windows were their specialty. Now, with the help of this meticulously rendered pattern book, you too can replicate a number of these beautiful stained glass motifs. Designer Connie Clough Eaton has skillfully adapted a variety of authentic Tiffany window designs, capturing in 60 detailed black-and-white line illustrations all the grace and spirit of the originals. Included are patterns for landscape and memorial windows, panels, transoms, skylights, glass screens, and other "canvases" used by the stained glass artisan. Among the individual patterns are "Pumpkins and Beets," a window in the Impressionist style; "The Deep Blue Sea," designed by Tiffany and exhibited at the Libre Esthétique, Brussels, 1897; the Julia Wheeler Tiffany memorial window, a domestic panel featuring parrots and hibiscus; a peacock window, c. 1910; "Sir Galahad," the Ogden Cryder Memorial window in St. Andrew's Dune Church, Southampton, Long Island, 1901; a floral skylight, c. 1919, and many more. A splendid source of design inspiration, these lovely royalty-free patterns can also be used in assorted craft and coloring projects.

In the town of Lake Wachannabee, Ontario, lies the Winter Garden, home to matron Giggy Andrewes and her brood: her strung-out nephew Jem Waferly, his friend Cora, Chappy the whippet, two peacocks, and Jem's lover Rob, who lies convalescing after having had most of his flesh stripped away. A mystery? Well, yes, it would be if only the characters weren't so easily distracted by the noir-ishly handsome chief inspector, the seductive female veterinarian and the dashing anthropology professor studying the Winter Garden's gorge. The Winter Gardeners spend a summer of sultry afternoons nursing Rob, languidly drinking cocktails and trying to picture Nude Descending Staircase in their supposedly Cubist garden. Soon, however, they find themselves in a court room, where their family's values are on trial in a case reminiscent of that of Oscar Wilde.

Paul Keating

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/paul-keating-3...
Paul Keating: the big-picture leader is the definitive biography of Australia's 24th prime minister, and the first that Keating has cooperated with in more than two decades. Drawing on around 15 hours of new interviews with Keating, coupled with access to his extensive personal files, this book tells the story of a political warrior's rise to power, from the outer suburbs of Sydney through Young Labor and into parliament at just 25 years of age; serving as a minister in the last days of the Whitlam government; his path-breaking term as treasurer in the 1980s; his four-year prime ministership from 1991 to 1996; and his passions and interests since. Bramston has interviewed more than 100 people who know and worked with Keating, including his family, parliamentary colleagues, advisers, party officials, union leaders, public servants, and journalists. This book includes interviews with Gough Whitlam, Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hawke, John Howard, Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Tony Abbott, Doug Anthony, Bill Hayden, Andrew Peacock, Ian Sinclair, John Hewson, Alexander Downer, Peter Costello, Kim Beazley, Simon Crean, Cheryl Kernot, and Bob Carr. Bramston has secured access to Labor archives, and he also documents key debates in once-secret cabinet papers, reveals caucus minutes for the first time, draws on the unpublished diaries of Neal Blewett and Bob Carr, discloses meeting records from the archives of US presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, talks to former British prime minister Tony Blair, and shares his new discoveries from the personal files of Gough Whitlam, Bill Hayden, Bob Hawke, and John Howard. Paul Keating saw political leadership as the combination of courage and imagination, a belief that powered his public career and helps explain his extraordinary triumphs and crushing lows. Keating blazed a trail of reform with a vision for Australia's future that still attracts ardent admirers and the staunchest critics. This book chronicles, analyses, and interprets Keatin
