SMS Communication

www.ebooks.com/cj.asp?IID=1715700&cjsku=1715700...
Given the extensive use of LOL ( Laughing Out Loud ), MDR ( Mort De Rire ) and PTDR ( PéTé De Rire ) in French texting and the inclusion of lol in the Oxford English Dictionary in 2011 and in Le Petit Robert in 2013, this paper aims to study the functioning of these three initialisms. Considered mainly as interjections, I hypothesize that lol , mdr , and ptdr could work syntactically (through their non-integration in the syntactic clause and position) and semantically (through their semantic opacity and procedural meaning) as discourse markers. In order to show this discourse marker use, this exploratory study was carried out using a prototypical methodology characterized by an inclusive and gradual approach. Based on syntactic and semantic analysis, a discourse marker ranking was performed, and this resulted in a contextual analysis (co-occurrences, moods and moves). This inclusive and gradual approach allows for doubt and lack of knowledge of the context in the analysis process. More broadly, this work also throws light on texting as a spontaneous computer-mediated communication type with writing constraints imposed by the communication medium and the situation.

Communication Criticism

www.ebooks.com/cj.asp?IID=996656&cjsku=996656...
This book demonstrates how an understanding of the fundamental principles of communication will help in evaluating the effects, effectiveness, truthfulness, and ethics of every kind of communication from traditional "soapbox speeches" to reading a magazine, talking to a friend, watching court proceedings, or television news. Jodi R. Cohen's informally written, critical guide introduces classical theories of rhetoric at the beginning of each chapter, then expands the discussion with contemporary postmodern theories, and concerns such as aesthetics and cultural bias. There are question-and-answer sections in each chapter as well as many examples.

Communication Acoustics

www.ebooks.com/cj.asp?IID=1840832&cjsku=1840832...
In communication acoustics, the communication channel consists of a sound source, a channel (acoustic and/or electric) and finally the receiver: the human auditory system, a complex and intricate system that shapes the way sound is heard. Thus, when developing techniques in communication acoustics, such as in speech, audio and aided hearing, it is important to understand the time–frequency–space resolution of hearing. This book facilitates the reader’s understanding and development of speech and audio techniques based on our knowledge of the auditory perceptual mechanisms by introducing the physical, signal-processing and psychophysical background to communication acoustics. It then provides a detailed explanation of sound technologies where a human listener is involved, including audio and speech techniques, sound quality measurement, hearing aids and audiology. Key features: Explains perceptually-based audio: the authors take a detailed but accessible engineering perspective on sound and hearing with a focus on the human place in the audio communications signal chain, from psychoacoustics and audiology to optimizing digital signal processing for human listening. Presents a wide overview of speech, from the human production of speech sounds and basics of phonetics to major speech technologies, recognition and synthesis of speech and methods for speech quality evaluation. Includes MATLAB examples that serve as an excellent basis for the reader’s own investigations into communication acoustics interaction schemes which intuitively combine touch, vision and voice for lifelike interactions.
