An Introduction to Programming by the Inventor of C++ Preparation for Programming in the Real World The book assumes that you aim eventually to write non-trivial programs, whether for work in software development or in some other technical field. Focus on Fundamental Concepts and Techniques The book explains fundamental concepts and techniques in greater depth than traditional introductions. This approach will give you a solid foundation for writing useful, correct, maintainable, and efficient code. Programming with Today's C++ (C++11 and C++14) The book is an introduction to programming in general, including object-oriented programming and generic programming. It is also a solid introduction to the C++ programming language, one of the most widely used languages for real-world software. The book presents modern C++ programming techniques from the start, introducing the C++ standard library and C++11 and C++14 features to simplify programming tasks. For BeginnersAnd Anyone Who Wants to Learn Something New The book is primarily designed for people who have never programmed before, and it has been tested with many thousands of first-year university students. It has also been extensively used for self-study. Also, practitioners and advanced students have gained new insight and guidance by seeing how a master approaches the elements of his art. Provides a Broad View The first half of the book covers a wide range of essential concepts, design and programming techniques, language features, and libraries. Those will enable you to write programs involving input, output, computation, and simple graphics. The second half explores more specialized topics (such as text processing, testing, and the C programming language) and provides abundant reference material. Source code and support supplements are available from the author's website.

Film Programming
This book explores artistic choices in the field of cinema exhibition, focusing on film theatres, film festivals, and film archives, setting the various issues of film curating in their international context. The availability of artistic and commercial film has increased overwhelmingly as a result of the digitization of the infrastructure of distribution and exhibition; in this overflow of supply a reasoned and well-grounded selection is necessary more than ever. The conventional structures of the film trade are in a process of transformation and, in the digital age, supply and demand can meet without the intervention of traditional gatekeepers; everybody can be a film curator, in a passive or active way. This volume addresses three kinds of readers: those who want to become film curators themselves, or do research of the phenomenon of film curating, and those who are critical cinema visitors who want to investigate the story behind the process of selection of the available film supply and the way to present these films.

Programming Windows
Reimagined for full-screen and touch-optimized apps, Windows 8 provides a platform for reaching new users in new ways. In response, programming legend Charles Petzold is rewriting his classic Programming Windowsone of the most popular programming books of all timeto show developers how to use existing skills and tools to build Windows 8 apps. Programming Windows , Sixth Edition focuses on creating Windows 8 apps accessing the Windows Runtime with XAML and C#. The book also provides C++ code samples. The Sixth Edition is organized in two parts: Part I, Elementals, begins with the interrelationship between code and XAML, basic event handling, dynamic layout, controls, templates, asynchronous processing, the application bar, control customization, and collections. You should emerge from Part I ready to create sophisticated page-oriented collection-based user interfaces using the powerful ListView and GridView controls. Part II, Specialties, explores topics you might not need for every program but are essential to a well-rounded education in Windows 8. These include multitouch, bitmap graphics, interfacing with share and search facilities, printing, working with the sensors (GPS and orientation), text, obtaining input from the stylus (including handwriting recognition), accessing web services, calling Win32 and DirectX functions, and bringing your application to the Windows 8 app store.

Programming ASP.NET
O'Reilly has once again updated its bestselling tutorial on ASP.NET, the world's leading web development tool from Microsoft. In Programming ASP.NET , Third Edition, authors Jesse Liberty and Dan Hurwitz give you the lowdown on the technology's latest version, ASP.NET 2.0, as well as Visual Studio 2005. Among the most significant improvements to ASP.NET 2.0 are new server controls and services that make you dramatically more productive. In fact, when compared to its predecessor, ASP.NET 2.0 reduces the amount of code you have to write by about 75%. Creating interactive web applications has never been easier-but that still doesn't mean it's hassle-free! The difficulty in ASP.NET 2.0 is that it's so complete and flexible that there are many pieces that must be woven together to build a robust, scalable, and efficient application. Fortunately, Programming ASP.NET , Third Edition is on the case, dispensing all the information you need to be effective with this dynamic tool. For starters, the book features a comprehensive tutorial on Web Forms, the user interface that gives web applications their look and feel. It then offers detailed explanations of all new controls, including web server controls, HTML controls, and custom controls. Used properly, these controls are able to take care of nearly all the foundation work-security, data access, layout, etc.-that you would normally have to write yourself. Free of these burdensome tasks, you can instead focus on your specific application. Other new material found in this updated edition even shows you how to create ASP.NET 2.0 pages for mobile devices. With Programming ASP.NET , Third Edition at your side, there's virtually no end to the programming possibilities.

Programming ALGOL
Programming ALGOL describes the basics of computer programming using Algol. Commands that could be added to Algol and could increase its scope are described, including multiplication and division and the use of brackets. The idea of labeling or naming a command is also explained, along with a command allowing two alternative results. Most of the important features of Algol syntax are discussed, and examples of compound statements (that is, sets of commands enclosed by a begin ... end command) are given. Comprised of 11 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the digital computer and how it works using a list of instructions known as a program. The "punched-tape" method of feeding information into a computer is described together with the flexowriter. The next chapter provides an overview of Algol by studying a very simple program and comparing it with the same sequence of instructions written in normal English. The third chapter is about building a program, first by increasing the complexity of the actual computation and then economizing on memory stores. Subsequent chapters focus on how computer programs can be built up of simple commands; labeling or naming a command; facilities in the Algol language which allow the addition of a second alternative command to an if ... then statement; and the use of a flow diagram to translate a problem into Algol. The final chapter examines the method of running a program on a computer. This monograph will be of interest to computer programmers.
