Two Colours

A nearly century-old mother narrates her life story to her son. This was a life of struggle and tragedy for many Ukrainian people in the twentieth century. In 1917, the revolution, a plague with red commissars, descended upon Ukraine and her people. Anna, my mother, said that life turned into red and black colours: red stars and the big black guns of the commissars. Millions died under their unjust, oppressive regime, and Anna and her family were confined in a dungeon out on the deserted steppes; they were all doomed to perish. The commissars took all the people's grain and other products; the merciless Golodomor, suffocation by hunger, killed many millions of Ukrainians in 1932 and 1933. And very soon, there was one more disaster: World War II, which stormed through the deeply wounded country, killing again many millions because Stalin and the other Kremlin rulers made this possible. My father, Ivan, was a pilot of a dive-bomber, lost his life in the war; like many millions of soldiers, he was betrayed by the Communist regime.

True Colours

Shivani always knew that the day would come where her parents would choose her husband for her. What she didn't expect was to fall in love with Marley; a young black West African single parent. This brought Shivani to a painful crossroad where both routes led to a deep loss and no going back. Where one route allowed her to please the community, keep the family honour, reputation and happiness, the other led to them feeling ashamed, dishonoured and disgusted. Shivani was forced to make a choice between her family's happiness and her own. True Colours is just one story of countless people worldwide at similar crossroads. What is so shameful about loving and marrying someone from a different country, culture, colour or caste? Where is the honour in pushing your child to marry someone? Where is the pride in disowning your child for a choice you don't like? How is this spiritually or morally acceptable? In 2016, why are these questions still being raised on the back of an autobiography of an educated, British Asian Indian woman living in London; one of the most diverse cities in the world?

He also knows people are willing to pay a lot of money for the paintings he painstakingly creates. Unfortunately, the stranger's dark brown gaze reminds Frankie of all he's loved and lost, and his hold on reality starts to unravel. Clint Langley is mesmerised by the funny little man in the bright-coloured peasant skirt. Unaware of Frankie's impressive resume, he takes time out of his boring insurance seminars to spend his days observing Frankie from afar. Eventually, he steps out of his comfort zone and reaches out to the painter, but when he notices changes in Frankie's behaviour, Clint wonders if he's strong enough to give Frankie the unconditional love it will take to make a relationship work.
